Everything new parents need to know—plus how Baby Brilliance can support your journey to better sleep.

Sleep training. Just reading those two words can stir up a swirl of emotions—hope, fear, guilt, confusion. At Baby Brilliance, we’ve supported many families through this process, and we’re here to explain the process to you with clarity, compassion, and evidence-based guidance.

Whether you’re brand new to the idea or debating if your baby is ready, here’s everything you need to know about what sleep training actually means, how to decide when to start, and why it doesn’t have to be harsh to be effective.

What is Sleep Training?

Simply put, sleep training is the process of helping your baby learn to fall asleep independently and connect sleep cycles without external help (rocking, feeding, pacifiers, etc.). It’s about teaching healthy sleep habits that promote longer, more restorative sleep—for your baby and for you. At Baby Brilliance, we believe that helping your child learn independent sleep is one of the greatest gifts you can give—not just for their growth and development now, but for healthy sleep habits that will benefit them for a lifetime.

Sleep training does not have to mean “cry it out,” though that is one method among many. At Baby Brilliance, we tailor our approach based on your child’s age, temperament, and your parenting values.

Some common methods include:

  • Sleep Lady Shuffle
  • Pick-Up Put-Down
  • Ferber/Graduated Extinction

We firmly believe that focusing on sleep foundations in the early days (before 4 months) can give your child the skills and routine to never need true sleep training. Our newborn care specialists, postpartum doulas, and night nannies integrate this into their care and can help guide you in how to set your child up for success. If true sleep training is needed, we believe there is no one-size-fits-all strategy, so that is where we can help guide with a plan that meets your specific goals.

When Should You Start Sleep Training?

Setting healthy sleep foundations should start from day one. There are truly things you can do right away that help a baby learn healthy sleep associations.  If needed, we typically recommend formal sleep training between 4 to 6 months, when babies are developmentally ready to sleep for longer stretches and can begin to self-soothe. However, sleep shaping can begin much earlier—with things like consistent routines, sleep cues, and day/night differentiation.

Signs your baby may be ready:

  • They can fall asleep on their own for naps or bedtime (even occasionally).
  • They no longer need frequent night feeds (as cleared by your pediatrician).
  • They’re showing signs of poor sleep quality—like short naps, frequent night wakings, or early rising.

Pro tip: Sleep training is much smoother when naps, feeds, and bedtime routines are already somewhat predictable. That’s one of the first areas we work on with families.

Common Sleep Training Myths (Debunked!)

  1. “Sleep training means letting your baby cry endlessly.”
False. Some crying is normal as babies adjust to change, but no method we use is ever about abandonment. We help families implement nurturing, responsive plans—even when boundaries are introduced.
  2. “If it doesn’t work in 3 days, it’s not working.”
Also false. Sleep training is a process, and some babies need 1–2 weeks or more to adjust fully. Consistency is key!
  3. “It’s selfish to want more sleep.”
Not at all. Rested parents are more present, patient, and emotionally available. Teaching your child to sleep is a gift for the whole family—and a skill your baby will use for life.
