The “Witching Hour”: How to Get Through It

There’s a moment many parents don’t expect.

The day may have gone smoothly, feeds felt manageable, naps happened, and you might have even thought, “We’re getting the hang of this.” And then evening arrives. Your baby becomes fussy, harder to settle, and seemingly inconsolable. Feeding doesn’t quite fix it. Rocking only helps briefly. You find yourself pacing, bouncing, and wondering what changed.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not doing anything wrong. You’re simply experiencing what we call the “witching hour.”

What Is the Witching Hour?

The “witching hour” refers to a period, typically in the late afternoon or evening, when newborns become more fussy, alert, and difficult to soothe.

It often:

  • Starts around 2–3 weeks of age
  • Peaks around 6–8 weeks
  • Gradually improves by 10–12 weeks

This phase is incredibly common and, while challenging, completely developmentally normal.

Why It Happens

At Baby Brilliance, we always come back to one core truth: your baby is adjusting to the world outside the womb.

During the evening hours, several factors come together:

1. Overtiredness Builds Throughout the Day

Newborns have very short wake windows (often just 45–60 minutes). When those are stretched, even slightly, it can lead to overstimulation and fussiness by evening.

2. Nervous System Overload

Your baby is taking in new sights, sounds, and sensations all day long. By evening, their nervous system can feel overwhelmed.

3. Cluster Feeding

Many babies naturally feed more frequently in the evening. This is your baby’s way of:

  • Boosting milk supply
  • Stocking up for longer sleep stretches
  • Finding comfort and regulation

4. Immature Circadian Rhythm

Newborns don’t yet have a fully developed internal clock. Day and night can feel blended, which often leads to more alertness at night.

How to Support Your Baby (and Yourself)

While we can’t eliminate the witching hour entirely, we can make it feel more manageable and supported.

Start an Earlier Evening Routine

One of the biggest shifts we recommend? Don’t wait until your baby is overtired. A calm bedtime routine between 6:30–7:30 PM can help regulate your baby’s rhythm and reduce evening fussiness over time.

Keep it simple and consistent:

  • Dim the lights
  • Swaddle
  • Turn on white noise
  • Offer a full feeding

Consistency creates cues your baby begins to recognize.

Lean Into Soothing (You’re Not Creating Bad Habits)

During this phase, your baby isn’t forming “bad habits.” They’re seeking regulation.

You can confidently:

  • Rock
  • Hold
  • Babywear
  • Offer contact naps

This is not spoiling, it’s supporting their needs and offering comfort when needed the most.

Use Babywearing for Evening Calm

Babywearing can be especially helpful during this time of day.

It allows you to:

  • Keep your baby close and comforted
  • Free your hands to move around or care for other children
  • Provide gentle motion that naturally soothes

The combination of closeness, warmth, and movement can be incredibly regulating for a fussy newborn.

Lower Stimulation in the Evening

Think of the evening as a gentle transition, not a busy time.

We recommend:

  • Soft lighting
  • Minimal noise
  • Fewer transitions between caregivers
  • A calm, predictable environment

This helps prevent your baby from becoming overtired and overstimulated.

Take Shifts When You Can

If you have a partner or support system, this is the time to lean on it. Even a short break, 20 minutes to shower, step outside, or reset, can make a meaningful difference in how you feel. Your well-being matters just as much as your baby’s.
